2011 Photo Of The Year: Hamburg Voting Result
It was a tale of Australian domination in Hamburg this year, with Brad Kahlefeldt sprinting to his first ever Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series win and Emma Moffatt claiming her first win since 2009 in the all Australia, all Emma podium.. But in the ITU Photo of the Year race, there was just one winner as the podium shot of the Australian trio soaked in beer gathered an incredible 60.16 per cent of the vote.
The image captures the excitement and joy from all three. Moffatt emphasised it was an “extra special,” day, and Emma Snowsill said she was “Just really proud to be part of the Aussie girls today and to be on the podium with two other Emmas.”
Emma Jackson, whose claimed her first series podium with silver, couldn’t quite believe she’d been part of it.
“I was so happy just to be running with them in the race, so to come down the finish sprinting with Emma Snowsill, the Olympic Champion, and having Emma Moffatt, World Champion, just ahead it was a great feeling, and then crossing the line and having them there to celebrate with,” she said. “It was a great day from Australia.”
So with the fans choice decided, we hear from the man behind the lens. Over the past 20 years, Delly Carr’s stunning imagery has made him one of the best in the business. With numerous national and international accolades, Delly’s work continues to develop and reach new levels. This week, for the first time this year, Delly’s pick was the same as yours. Why? Because it makes him smile.
“Three beautiful giggling athletic Australian Girls, and lots and lots of cold beer. Give me a reason why an Australian like me wouldn’t think this is the best image of the day? This image always puts a smile on my face each time.” - Delly Carr
Camera: Nikon D3S
Exposure: 1/2000 sec, F2.8
ISO: 3200
It’s not surprising that this picture was so popular though, as it’s the second year in a row that an image of Moffatt and those German beer glasses have made the ITU Photo of the Year Final. Last year, it was this picture that won the Hamburg round.
But back to this year’s results, did you agree? Let us know your thoughts below. Check back on triathlon.org next week when we unveil the finalists for the London WCS and introduce photographer Janos Schmidt, who joined Delly Carr on the ground at this year’s Olympic preview. And you can have your say again.
