2011 Photo Of The Year: Madrid Voting Result

by Merryn Sherwood on 19 Nov, 2011 04:26 • Español

After the incredibly close battle between Delly Carr’s images of Javier Gomez and Paula Findlay in the Week 1 voting for this year’s Photo of The Year, the Week 2 result in Madrid was a comparative landslide. Just as Great Britain’s Alistair Brownlee and Jonathan Brownlee dominated the men’s race, claiming their first Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series 1-2 finish, the brothers easily won this week’s voting.

This picture perfectly captures just how in sync the brothers are, raising their water bottles at exactly the same moment, and gathered 45.48 per cent of the vote. The pre-race portrait of Barbara Riveros Diaz came in second, with 14.48 per cent of the votes, followed in third with another picture of the Brownlees linked in arms just before the finish line.

But it’s fitting that the winning picture sums up the story of the race and the performance that their nearest competitor, Javier Gomez, called their best.

“I think that was their bast race probably, because I knew how fast we went on the bike and the way they ran was just unbelievable and amazing,” Gomez said. “So I’m happy with my third place there, because they were just better than me.”

So with the fans choice decided, we hear from the man behind the lens. Over the past 20 years, Delly Carr’s stunning imagery has made him one of the best in the business. With numerous national and international accolades, Delly’s work continues to develop and reach new levels. Here’s his choice and why:

“Light can be friend or foe for a photographer. Today it was my friend. This small shaft of light touched us and bounced sparkle, magic and colour into this pre-race image.” - Delly Carr

Camera: Nikon D3S
Exposure: 1/8000 sec, F2.8
