Whitcombe wins in Tiszaujvaros

In one of the oldest running world cups on the circuit it was triathlon veteran Andrea Whitcombe of Great Britain to top the podium for the first time since 2005. Whitcombe’s time of 2 hours 2 minutes and 48 seconds bested her closest rival Felicity Abram of Australia by 46 seconds in the hot and dry conditions. Abram’s silver medal today comes off a second place finish at the Hamburg BG Triathlon World Cup one week ago. Beijing-bound Mariana Ohata of Brazil rounded out the podium in third a further 33 seconds back.

“I can’t believe it,” explained the 37-year old Whitcombe at the finish. “I’ve been so injured. I haven’t run at all in three months. I can’t believe I won.”

“It was a really hot day,” commented Abram. “Coming off last week from Hamburg, I was pretty happy with my second place there. To back it up again with second place here. I’m very satisfied. Consistency is my goal this year. To keep my ranking up as high as I can.”

From the starter’s horn it was Sarah Groff of the U.S. taking an early lead in the swim, exiting the water with local Margit Vanek of Hungary 23 seconds ahead of a group of four including Abram, Ohata, Whitcombe and Helle Frederiksen of Denmark.

After going out on her own for the first six kilometres and losing Vanek, Groff wisely sat up to wait for the group of four behind her rather then testing the mid-thirty degree temperatures solo. Once together the lead group of five immediately put a commanding two minutes on their chasers by the end of the first of seven short and technical laps through town. The lead grew to almost four minutes by the end of the 40 kilometre bike course leaving no doubt the medalists would come from this front group.

As temperatures continued to rise, the women hit the 10-kilometre flat and fast run course through the centre of town. As with the swim and bike Groff led out early in the run but was quickly passed by a charging Whitcombe and Abram. With recent personal best performances, early on it looked as though Abram would get her first world cup win.

This was not the case however as Whitcombe stormed away after the first of four laps to lead out on her own, putting time into her chasers on each lap.

Waving to the thousands of spectators gathered, Whitcombe crossed the finish line comfortably in first place for her third career world cup win. Although not selected for the British Olympic team, Whitcombe shows she is a contender for the remaining four BG Triathlon World Cup titles.

“It’s hard to cope with not going to the Olympics when I think I could have done very well but I’ve just got to get on,” said Whitcombe. “It’s just a shame our Olympic trials weren’t in really hot weather.”

“Tiszaujvaros is my town,” added bronze medalist Ohata. “My second time here and my second podium.”

Having pushed herself to the edge early on, Groff struggled through the final lap, being passed by Ohata, and barely crossing the line on her feet. Despite one of the fastest runs of the day, pre race favourite Vendula Frintova of the Czech Republic missed the lead group out of the swim and would settle for sixth place.

En una de las carreras más tradicional del circuito de la copa del mundo ha sido la británica quien se ha subido a lo más alto del podium por primera vez desde 2005.
Whitcombe con un tiempo de 2 horas, 2 minutos y 48 segundos superó a su más cercana rival, la australiana Felicity Abram en unas condiciones húmedas y calurosas. Abram medallista de plata en el día de hoy viene de conseguir un segundo puesto en la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG de Hamburgo la semana pasada. Mariana Ohata que participará en Beijing redondeó el podium en tercera posición a otros 33 segundos.

“No puedo creérmelo,” explico Whitcombe de 37 años de edad en la meta. “He estado tanto tiempo lesionada. No he corrido en tres meses. No me puedo creer que ganase.”

“Ha sido un día realmente caluroso,” comentó Abram. Tras venir de Hamburgo la semana pasada, estoy muy contenta de mi segundo puesto aquí. Repetir un segundo puesto. Estoy muy satisfecha. La regularidad es my objetivo este año. Mantenerme en la clasificación todo lo alto que pueda.”

Desde el pistoletazo inicial fue la estadounidense Sarah Groff, la que tomó la cabeza en la natación, saliendo del agua junto con la Hungara Margit Vanek con 23 segundos de ventaja sobre un grupo de cuatro en el que estaba Abram, Ohata, Whitcombe y Helle Frederiksen de Dinamarca.

Tras quedarse en solitario durante los seis primeros kilómetros y perder a Vanek, Groff con sabiduría decidió esperar al grupo de cuatro para no afrontar en solitario los trenta grados de temperatura en solitario. Una vez formado el grupo de cinco en cabeza pusieron rápidamente dos minutos de ventaja sobre sus perseguidores al final de la primera vuelta de las siete cortas y técnicas vueltas por el centro de la ciudad. La ventaja creció hasta los casi cuatro minutos al finalizar los 40 kilómetros del circuito de la bicicleta dejando claro que las medallistas saldrían de este grupo de cabeza.

Como las temperaturas continuaban subiendo, las mujeres atacaron los 10 kilómetros del llano y rápido recorrido a través del centro de la ciudad. Como en la natación y en la bicicleta Groof se puso rápidamente en cabeza pero fue rápidamente superada por Whitcombe y Abram. En su mejor actuación personal recientemente, parecía que Abram conseguiría su primera victoria en la copa del mundo.

Este no fue el caso ya que Whitcombe se alejó tras la primera de las cuatro vueltas liderando en solitario, incrementando el tiempo sobre sus perseguidores en cada vuelta.
Jaleando a los miles de espectadores que se dieron cita, Whitcombe cruzó la línea de meta con comodidad en primera posición, consiguiendo la tercera victoria de su carrera en la copa del mundo. Aunque no haya sido seleccionada por el equipo Olímpico Británico, Whitcombe se muestra como una candidata a los cuatro títulos restantes de la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG.

“Es duro aceptar que no voy a estar en los Juegos Olímpicos cuando pienso que lo podía haber hecho muy bien, pero tengo que aceptarlo,” dijo Whitcombe. “Es una pena que nuestras pruebas de selección de nuestro país no se hayan celebrado bajo unas temperaturas calurosas.”

“Tiszaujvaros es mi ciudad,” añadió la medallista de bronce Ohata. “La segunda vez que estoy aquí y mi segundo podium.”

Habiéndose exigido al máximo desde el principio, Groff se desvaneción enm la última vuelta, siendo pasada por Ohata, y apenas pudo cruzar la, meta por su propio pie. A pesar de hacer una de las carreras más rápidas del día, la a priori favorita Vendula Frintova de la República Checa perdió al grupo de cabeza a la salida de la natación y se tuvo que conformar con la sexta posición.
