Frodeno Gets First Win in Japan

Reigning Olympic Champion, Jan Frodeno of Germany, finally claimed his first major win outside of the Olympic Games today at the Yokohama Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series event in a time of 1 hour 44 minutes and 31 seconds. Thousands of spectators lined the streets of the city to watch a daring breakaway on the bike and a solid run by the German, giving him his first world series win.

The opening swim was impressively lead by Josh Amberger from Australia, the young Aussie making his elite debut following a fourth place finish at last year’s ITU Triathlon Junior World Championships in Vancouver. As sea temperatures hung in the high twenties the warm marine conditions brought jellyfish in towards the shore, and unfortunately for Daniel Unger he got a bit too close for comfort. Having been stung on his neck during the warm up the German 2007 world champion suffered with breathing problems in the water and dropped out on the first lap of the bike.

Air temperatures out on the course stayed up in the high thirties although the humidity experienced in the women’s competition was not as fierce. Following 20km of riding the small chase pack made their way onto the back of the leaders which was countered by a strong attack by Courtney Atkinson. The Australian, a five time winner of the Ishigaki World Cup which is held in similar conditions, sprinted up the road from the chasers on a solo mission and was joined soon after by the German pairing of Frodeno and Maik Petzold.

With three of the big names in the breakaway the likes of Kris Gemmell, Javier Gomez and Bevan Docherty came to the front of the chase, picking up the pace to keep their advantage within a manageable distance come the run.

The leaders entered transition with a 41 second lead, but they were soon whittled down to just two as Petzold suffered in the heat. Further behind the chasing athletes started to string out with just Gemmell and Laurent Vidal from France able to handle the fast Gomez pace as the Spaniard set about closing down on the Olympic champion.

As Frodeno put his head down and accelerated again Atkinson dropped back into the clutches of the closing trio who reduced the German’s advantage to just 25 seconds with 5km left to run. Remarkably, despite his fatigue, Frodeno was able to respond and pulled away again, buoyed on the possibility of winning his first Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series race.

Once in the home straight the elation spread across the leader’s face and with time to spare the Olympic gold medallist slapped hands and played to the large crowd gathered at the finish line. Further behind Gemmell kicked away from Gomez to take second, just one week after finishing third in London. Gomez had to settle for third with Vidal in fourth. Fifth went to Bevan Docherty from New Zealand, the Beijing Olympic bronze medallist returning to action following a month break.

“After Hamburg I was really disappointed and I went back to the drawing board to refocus. I went to the gym and did some weight sessions and had a few check ups, I’m just really glad it came together.” said Frodeno. “Today was awesome. Thanks to the boys, Atko [Courtney Atkinson] and Maik [Petzold]. If they hadn’t gone on the bike you never know what would have happened. I’m already looking ahead with one eye on next season. I’ll take this win with confidence. Having just one win can make a season, so I can go home a happy man.”

“I asked him [Gomez] if he was ready for a sprint and he said ‘no, not really’, and I said ‘yeah, me neither’,” laughed Gemmell. “I said before London that the goal was the end of the year and my form is coming together and I’m really happy and really impressed that I’m back doing well after last week. What a great day for Frodeno, anyone who races like that deserves to win, he was just brilliant!”

“It was an uncomfortable and complicated week with the long trip from London and with the crash last weekend it meant I couldn’t sleep and train well so the podium is good but it was not a good day for me,” said Gomez. “The main problem was the heat, it felt a bit slow.”

The duo of Atkinson and Petzold ultimately paid the price for the breakaway, fading throughout the run to finish in eight and tenth respectively.

Gemmell’s second place moves him into third in the rankings. Gomez’s third place keeps him in second and within 351 points of series leader Alistair Brownlee heading to the Grand Final in Gold Coast, Australia in three weeks time.

El actual Campeón Olímpico, el alemán Jan Frodeno, por fin ha logrado hoy su primer gran triunfo tras los Juegos Olímpicos en la carrera de Yokohama de las Series del Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy en un tiempo de 1 hora, 44 minutos y 31 segundos. Miles de espectadores se dieron cita en las calles de la ciudad para ver una atrevida escapada en la bicicleta y una sólida carrera a pie del alemán, que le ha dado su primera victoria en las series mundiales.

El segmento de la natación fue sorprendentemente liderado por el australiano Josh Amberger, el joven australiano que hacía su debut en la categoría élite, después de un cuarto puesto el año pasado en los Campeonatos del Mundo Junior de Triatlón ITU de Vancouver. Debido a las altas temperaturas del mar, un banco de medusas se acercó a la costa y por desgracia para Daniel Unger no fue muy agradable tenerlas cerca. Mientras realizaba el calentamiento, el alemán campeón del mundo sufrió una picadura y tuvo problemas respiratorios en el agua que le obligaron a abandonar en la primera vuelta de la bicicleta.

La temperatura del aire era superior a los 30 grados, aunque la humedad no era tan alta como en la competición femenina. En los siguientes 20 km de ciclismo el grupito cazador llego hasta detrás de los líderes, cuando se produjo el ataque de Courtney Atkinson. El australiano, cinco veces ganador de la Copa del Mundo de Ishigaki, la cual se disputa en unas condiciones muy similares, atacó desde atrás con una única misión y pronto se le unieron la pareja alemana formada por Frodeno y Maik Petzold.

Con tres hombres de la talla de Kris Gemmell, Javier Gómez y Bevan Docherty en el grupo perseguidor, aumentaron el ritmo para mantener su ventaja dentro de una distancia razonable de cara a la carrera a pie.

Los líderes entraron en la transición con una ventaja de 41 segundos, pero pronto el trío se redujo sólo a dos ya que Petzold no pudo seguir el ritmo debido al fuerte calor. Por detrás el grupo perseguidor comenzó a tirar de la cuerda y sólo Gemmell y el francés Laurent Vidal fueron capaces de seguir el fuerte ritmo del español que intentaba acercarse al campeón Olímpico.

Frodeno agachó la cabeza y aceleró de nuevo, lo que provocó que Atkinson se descolgase y fuese atrapado por el trío perseguidor, quien redujo la ventaja del alemán a sólo 25 segundos a 5km para la meta. Sorprendentemente, a pesar de su fatiga, Frodeno fue capaz de responder y distanciarse de nuevo, animado por la posibilidad de ganar su primera carrera de las Series del Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy.

Una vez ya en la recta final la alegría se reflejó en la cara del líder y con tiempo de sobra el medallista de oro Olímpico chocó las manos y tocó a la gran multitud que se dio cita en la línea de meta. Por detrás Gemmell arrancó para distanciarse de Gómez y llegar segundo, tan solo una semana después de terminar tercero en Londres. Gómez tuvo que conformarse con la tercera posición, mientras que Vidal fue cuarto. El quinto puesto fue para el neozelandés Bevan Docherty, el medallista de bronce Olímpico regresaba a la acción después de un mes de descanso.

“Después de Hamburgo me encontraba muy decepcionado, por lo que me tomé un tiempo para reflexionar y reconducir mi temporada. Fui al gimnasio e hice algunas sesiones de pesas y tuve algunas revisiones, estoy tan contento de que todo haya ido bien.” dijo Frodeno. “Hoy ha sido impresionante. Gracias a los chicos, Atko [Courtney Atkinson] y Maik [Petzold]. Si ellos no hubieran estado en la bicicleta nunca sabríamos lo que hubiese pasado. Ya estoy mirando adelante con un ojo en la próxima temporada. La victoria me dará confianza. Este triunfo vale una temporada, por lo que me voy a casa muy contento.”

“Le pregunté a él [Gómez] si estaba listo para el sprint y me dijo que ‘no, no realmente’ y dije ‘yo tampoco’,” sonrió Gemmell. “Dije antes de Londres que el objetivo estaba al final de año y mi forma está llegando y estoy muy contento y sorprendido de haberlo hecho otra vez bien después de la semana pasada. Ha sido un gran día para Frodeno, cualquiera que corra como él se merece ganar, ha estado brillante.”

“Ha sido una semana incómoda y complicada tras el largo viaje desde Londres y con la caída del fin de semana pasado no he podido dormir y entrenar bien, por lo que el pódium es un buen resultado, pero no ha sido un gran día para mí,” dijo Gómez. “El principal problema ha sido el calor, me he encontrado un poco lento.”

El dúo formado por Atkinson y Petzold finalmente pagó el precio de la escapada, desvaneciéndose durante la carrera a pie, terminando respectivamente octavo y décimo.

La segunda posición de Gemmell, le sitúa en la tercera posición de la clasificación general. Gómez, tercer clasificado sube hasta la segunda posición de la general y se sitúa a 351 puntos del líder de las series, Alistair Brownlee que encabeza la clasificación a falta de la Gran Final de Gold Coast dentro de tres semanas.
