2008 in Review: World Cups

The nerves and tension were high as we entered the Olympic year. All the training and racing were in preparation for the Beijing Olympic Games in August. There were 12 stops in the 2008 BG Triathlon World Cup series, all visiting 12 different countries. The competition was fierce early in the year and the first three world cups were hotly contested as many athletes and countries were still vying for Olympic spots. By season’s end, Javier Gomez (ESP) and Samantha Warriner (NZL) were crowned overall world cup series champions. For Gomez, it was his third straight overall title, becoming just the second man to win three straight and just the second man to win the world championship and the world cup series in the same year. Warriner became the first Kiwi woman since 1993 to win the world cup series.

TOP MOMENTS & HIGHLIGHTS:

Gomez’s New Standard in New Plymouth
After the bike he was down by more than a minute. But that hardly mattered for Javier Gomez in the final leg of the New Plymouth BG Triathlon World Cup. In what he called “his best race ever”, the Spaniard ripped through the run, clocking a mind-boggling 29:37 and leaving his fellow competitors in disbelief. “That’s one of the fastest runs I’ve done on the circuit and it was a tough course. All credit to Javier, he was absolutely flying out there and there wasn’t much I could do to beat him,” said silver medallist Brad Kahlefeldt. “I tried to go with him but that boy’s got some serious pace and I think I lasted 300 meters,” said bronze medallist Andrew Johns.

Fernandes Rolls to New Record
ITU celebrated its 200th world cup in Madrid on May 25 and Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes ensured it was a historic event. After tying Emma Carney’s record last year in Greece, Fernandes finally set the all-time mark with her 20th world cup title. Fittingly she broke the record in Madrid where she won her first world cup as a precocious 17-year old. Now at just 23 years old, Fernandes is making a case to be considered the greatest ever.

“You’re never too old”
Those are the words Samantha Warriner lives by. Not surprising considering the 37-year old has racked up seven world cup wins since 2005 including four in the past two seasons. Only Emma Snowsill and Vanessa Fernandes have won more since 2007. Victory at the season finale in Huatulco ensured Warriner would finish 2008 number one in the world. She became the first Kiwi to win the overall world cup series since Hamish Carter in 1998.

Los nervios y la tensión estuvieron por todo lo alto con la llegada del año Olímpico. Todos los entrenamientos y las carreras estuvieron orientados a los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing en Agosto. Hubo 12 paradas de las series de la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG 2008, cada una de las 12 en un país diferente. La competencia fue feroz desde principios de año y las tres primeras copas del mundo fueron muy reñidas ya que muchos atletas y países estaban luchando por las plazas Olímpicas. Al final de la temporada, Javier Gómez (ESP) y Samantha Warriner (NZL) fueron coronados como campeones de la general de las series de la copa del mundo. Para Gómez, fue su tercer título de la general consecutivo, convirtiéndose en el segundo hombre en ganar tres títulos consecutivos y el segundo hombre en ganar en un mismo el campeonato del mundo y las series de la copa del mundo. Warriner se convirtió en la primera mujer neozelandesa en ganar las series de la copa del mundo desde 1993.

MOMENTOS DESTACADOS

Gran Nivel de Gómez en New Plymouth
Tras terminar el segmento de la bicicleta con más de un minuto de desventaja, no fue sin embargo un gran problema para Javier Gómez en el último segmento de la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG de New Plymouth. En lo que él llamó “la mejor carrera de su vida”, el español rompió la carrera, marcando un alucinante 29:37 y dejando incrédulos a sus rivales. “Ha sido una de las carreras más rápidas que he hecho en el circuito y eso que era un recorrido exigente. Todo el mérito para Javier, el parecía que estaba volando y no hubo mucho que pudiese hacer para derrotarle,” dijo el medallista de plata Brad Kahlefeldt. “Intenté seguirle pero ese chico puso un ritmo muy duro y creo que duré 300 metros,” dijo el medallista de bronce Andrew Johns.
Fernandes Fija un Nuevo Record
La ITU celebró su Copa del Mundo número 200 el 25 de Mayo y la portuguesa Vanessa Fernandes se aseguró la que fue una prueba histórica. Después de igualar el record de Emma Carney el año pasado en Grecia, Fernandes finalmente con su 20º título de la copa del mundo fijó la mejor marca de todos los tiempos. Justamente rompió el record en Madrid, en donde ganó a los 17 años su primera copa del mundo. Ahora, con tan sólo 23 años, Fernandes está haciendo méritos para ser considerada la más grande de la historia.
“Nunca se es demasiado mayor”
Estas fueron las palabras de Samantha Warriner. No es de extrañar considerando que con 37 años ha acumulado siete victorias en la copa del mundo desde 2005, de las cuales cuatro han sido en las dos últimas temporadas. Sólo Emma Snowsill y Vanessa Fernandes han ganado más desde 2007.
Con la victoria en la última prueba de la temporada en Huatulco se aseguró el primer puesto en la Copa del Mundo 2008. Se convirtió en la primera neozelandesa en ganar las series de la copa del mundo desde que en 1998 lo hiciese Hamish Carter.
