Notification of Anti-Doping violations

ITU hereby publicizes that athletes Stephen Thompson, from Australia, and Nuno José Pereira e Silva, from Portugal, have been suspended from competition for committing anti-doping rule violations involving the presence of prohibited substances.

Australian triathlete Mr. Thompson will serve a 4-year period of ineligibility after failing an in-competition doping control during the 2018 Gold Coast Grand Final Age Group World Championships, in which he finished in second place in the 30-35 class.  His urine sample returned an adverse analytical finding for the non-specified substance EPO, classified under the Prohibited List as a Peptide Hormone.

Mr. Thompson’s period of ineligibility began December 19, 2018, the date he was provisionally suspended. The results and points he earned at the 2018 Gold Coast Grand Final will be disqualified, with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points and appearance money. The Athlete also competed as a guide to a visually impaired athlete whose results have also been disqualified as a result. Mr. Thompson will be free to resume competition 19 December 2022.

Portuguese triathlete Mr. Nuno José Pereira e Silva will serve a 2-year period of ineligibility after failing an in-competition doping control during the 2019 ITU Multisport Triathlon Event in Pontevedra, Spain. His urine sample returned an adverse analytical finding for Ephedrine and Oxilofrine, both classified under the Prohibited List as specified Stimulants.

Mr. Pereira’s period of ineligibility began on May 4, 2019, the date of his sample collection.  The results he earned at the 2019 Multisport Triathlon Event in Pontevedra Spain will be disqualified, with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points and appearance money. The Athlete will be free to resume competition May 4, 2021.

Both Athletes’ period of ineligibility extends to competitions in any sport at any level as well as to competitions in all other organizations promoting Events in the sport of triathlon who have elected to adopt, implement and enforce the ITU Anti-Doping Rules.
