At the first stage of the ITU Triathlon European Cup series in Chania, Crete, Greece, 62 elite athletes (12 women and 50 men) challenged the spectacular but challenging course.

With water temperature at a cool 18.5 degrees Celsius, wetsuits were used in an otherwise hot day. The women started at 11:00 with all the favorites staying in the front in the water and on the bike course. Everything was decided on the run section along the docks in the historical centre of Chania with thousands of spectators cheering the athletes while having their lunch.

Former European Champion, Ana Burgos of Spain was able to increase the pace from the beginning for a solo win. Silver medal went to Olesya Prystayko of the Ukraine, just ahead of Deniz Dimaki, the local favorite who delighted the crowed with the bronze.

The men’s race started at 14:00 with a big group of nearly 20 athletes out of the water at the same time, ready for a big battle on the bike leg. Sylvain Sudrie of France and Leonardo Ballerini of Italy immediately took the lead and pushed the pace hard. They were able to increase the gap from the chasing pack to a minute and half to T2. The bike course was really technical with a lot of turns that helped the two leaders to arrive at T2 alone.

Sudrie had the power to keep the first position until the end while Ritchie Nicholls of Great Britain, last year’s under23 European champion, was closing the gap but had to stop due to a muscle problem. The silver medal went to Luc Van Es of the Netherlands and bronze to Ivan Tutukin of Russia.

The event was really important for the athletes in their preparation for the rest of the season and the battle is there for the new flag position in the European Ranking. The next stage of the European Cup series will be on the next weekend in Pontevedra, Spain.
