Snowsill strikes Aussie Gold

Three-time world and Commonwealth Games champion Emma Snowsill of Australia won the 2007 Mooloolaba BG Triathlon World Cup today, in Mooloolaba, Australia, with a time of 1 hour 59 minutes and 20 seconds. Amongst one of the most competitive women’s fields ever assembled for a world cup, Snowsill was able to break away from her biggest rival Vanessa Fernandes of Portugal at the five kilometre mark in the run to take top spot in the first world cup of the 2007 season. Snowsill’s team mate and current Under23 world champion Erin Densham was able to pass Fernandes in the final stage to claim second place, 31 seconds back. A further 10 seconds back in third was Fernandes.

“It’s one of the races I’ve never won before, it’s always eluded me and that’s always an incentive,” commented the petite Snowsill. “The home crowd is always fantastic, to not be able to hear yourself breathing and hurting and to hear everybody else is a fantastic feeling, and I think that really makes all the difference”

After the opening 1,500 metre ocean swim, a group of 22 athletes formed early on the bike, including all the top players such as local favourites Annabel Luxford, Felicity Abram and Emma Moffatt, American Laura Bennett, the second and third ranked Joelle Franzmann and Anja Dittmer of Germany, Junior world champion Kirsten Sweetland of Canada, the Kiwi duo of Debbie Tanner and Andrea Hewitt, as well as the eventual podium finishers. The large group was able to work together over the hilly 40 kilometre bike to build almost a minute gap on the rest of the field which included a number of strong runners such as Samantha Warriner of New Zealand, Lauren Groves of Canada and Rina Hill of Australia.

Out onto the tough and hot run course it was Snowsill, Fernandes and Tanner immediately taking the lead with Densham trailing. The first to drop off the heated pace was Tanner and at the 5 kilometre point of the run Snowsill was able to break away and cruise to her sixth world cup win.

“I knew Vanessa was there for a while,” said Snowsill. “I never at any stage knew she wasn’t there. It was all about going as hard as possible.”

The fading Fernandes was eventually overtaken in the final kilometre by a late-charging Densham.

“She’s [Fernandes] definitely up there on a pedestal with Emma … and I don’t know how to explain beating her actually, she’s such a great athlete,” said a shocked Densham. “I just went as fast as I could in the finish. I kept looking down. I could see her shadows but then the finish line just came.”

Fernandes was stopped short of her, would be, record-breaking 13th consecutive world cup win with her bronze medal.

“I never thought of it. I just wanted to win,” stated Fernandes. “I tried to go with Emma but she was very strong today on the run, and I think I’m not so good on this kind of course, with the sun on the run. I think it was because of that I lost a bit of time to Densham. I think we have another very good girl with Erin Densham. I think it’s very good for the sport.”

An estimated 25,000 spectators enjoyed the 32 degree temperatures to watch a total of 153 of the world’s top triathletes competing for valuable Olympic qualifying points and their share of the US$100,000 prize purse.

Snowsill se hace con el Oro

La tres veces campeona del mundo y de los juegos de la Commonwealth, la australiana Emma Snowsill ganó hoy la Copa del Mundo BG de Triatlón e Mooloolaba, Australia, con un tiempo de 1 hora 59 minutos y 20 segundos. Entre uno de las participaciones más competitivas de una copa del mundo, Snowsill fue capaz de dejar atrás a su mayor rival Vanesa Fernandes de Portugal en la marca de los 5 kilómetros en la carrera para hacerse con la primera posición en la primera copa del mundo de la temporada 2007. La compañera de equipo de Snowsill y actual campeona del mundo Sub23, Erin Desham, fue capaz de adelantar a Fernandes llegando al final para hacerse con la segunda posición 31 segundos por detrás. 10 segundos más tarde llegó Fernandes en tercera posición.

“Es una de las carreras que no habí ganado nunca antes, siempre me eludió y era toda una iniciativa para mí”, comentó la pequeña Snoswill. “El público de casa es siempre fantástico, no ser capaz de oir tu propia respiración y tu sufrimiento y oir a todo el mundo es una fantástica sensación, y creo que marca la diferencia.”

Después de los 1500 m. natación inaugurales en el océano, un grupo de 22 atletas se subieron pronto a la bici, incluyendo a las favoritas como Annabel Luzford, Felicity Abram y Emma Moffatt, la americana Laura Bennett, la segunda y tercera en el ranking Joelle Franzmann y Anja Dittmer de Alemania, la campeona del mundo Junior Kirsten Sweetland de Canadá, el dúo Neocelandés compuesto por Debbie Tanner y Andrea Hewitt, así como las finalistas del podio. El numeroso grupo fue capaz de trabajar codo con codo hasta los sinuosos 40 Km. en bici para hacerse con casi un minuto de ventaja sobre el resto de participantes que incluía a un fuerte número de corredoras como Samantha Warriner de Nueva Zelanda, Laura Groves de Canadá y Rina Hill de Australia.

En la dura y disputada carrera fueron Snowsill, Fernandes y Tanner quienes inmediatamente se hicieron con el liderazgo con Desham siguiéndolas. La primera en abandonar el ritmo fue Tanner y a los 5 Km. de la última prueba Snowsill fue capaz de escaparse y hacerse con su sexta victoria en la copa del mundo.

“Sabía que Vanessa estaba ahí por un momento”, dijo Snowsill. “Nunca pensé que no estuviese. Se trataba de apretar lo más posible.”

Fernandes que fue perdiendo intensidad fue alcanzada en el último kilómetro por Desham que hizo una tardía escapada.

“(Fernandes) está definitivamente sobre un pedestal junto con Emma… y no sé como explicar el ganarle ahora mismo, es una gran atleta”, dijo emocionada Desham . “Sencillamente fui lo más rápido que pude en el final. Me mantuve mirando al suelo. Podía ver su sombra pero de repente la línea de meta apareció.”

Fernandes llegó cerca de ella, marcando un record con su 13ª victoria consecutiva en la copa del mundo con su medalla de bronce.

“Nunca lo pensé. Solo quería ganar,” dijo Fernandes. “Intenté seguir a Emma pero hoy estuvo muy fuerte en la carrera, i creo que no soy tan buena en este tipo de trazado, con el sol. Creo que por todo ello perdí algo de tiempo tras Desham. Creo que tenemos otra gran chica con Erin Desham. Creo que es muy buena deportista.”

Se estima que unos 25.000 espectadores disfrutaron de los 32ºC de temperatura para ver a un total de 153 de los mejores atletas del mundo compitiendo por puntos clasificables para los JJOO y por la bolsa de premios de 100.000 dólares americanos.
