Snowsill repeats in Mooloolaba

The bid for history was again derailed by three-time world champion Emma Snowsill who today won the BG Triathlon World Cup season opener in Mooloolaba.  In the first head-to-head battle between Snowsill and rival Vanessa Fernandes, it was the home favorite who triumphed.  Fernandes settled for silver, approximately 39 seconds behind.  Last year’s under23 world champion Lisa Norden of Sweden had an incredible run to take the bronze, becoming the first Swede to ever podium at a world cup in ITU history.

Snowsill and Fernandes were in the lead pack throughout the swim and bike and ran side by side for the first five kilometers.  Snowsill made her move on the third lap when she cranked up the pace up the hill.  Fernandes didn’t respond and let Snowsill get away to take her seventh career world cup title and second straight in Mooloolaba.

“The first race of the season, you just try to blow the cobwebs out.  I’m so happy I feel myself again.  The problems have dropped away.  I feel like I’m back where I want to be,” said Snowsill at the finish line.  “Everyone always says it would be great to have a head-to-head with Vanessa [Fernandes].  And I was thinking, ‘Great here it is.  I’ve got to try and kill myself in a sprint finish with Vanessa.’ Home crowd advantage is a great thing.”

Fernandes meanwhile just tried to look on the bright side.

“Last year I was third and this year I was second.  So that is better,” said Fernandes, who for the first time was second in a world cup, despite finishing third three times before.  “I tried to go first at the beginning but Emma [Snowsill] was very strong and was faster then me.  I was feeling really good the first two laps and then I think I broke a little bit and she ran away.”

Norden, who broke through last year with a seventh place at the Rhodes BG Triathlon World Cup, beat several world cup veterans for her first appearance ever on the world cup podium.

“This was far more then I expected today.  I’m absolutely stoked,” said Norden.  “I just wanted to try to run with the fast girls today.  I just wanted to see how fast they run.”

The Swede becomes the first Team BG athlete to medal at a world cup.  The Elite Athlete Development Programme (EADP) provides financial and team support to athletes from developing National Federations.

“I really hope that I can show that there are a lot of talented athletes who do not have the support.  There is a lot of talent out there that we need to look after.”

American Laura Bennett finished fourth while Brit Andrea Whitcombe rounded out the top five. In a riveting battle between Kiwis Andrea Hewitt and Nicky Samuels for the third and final New Zealand Olympic spot, Hewitt came out on top. Even though she was the top Kiwi across the line in 14th she did not make the top-5 need for automatic selection and will have to wait for book her ticket until the selectors have their say. Shockingly, little known Alee Sharp, who was competing in just her second world cup, was the second-best Aussie in seventh place, beating out established world cup stars Emma Moffatt who finished ninth, Felicity Abram who finished 12th, and Erin Densham who finished 21st.

La oportunidad de entrar en la historia ha sido otra vez desbaratada por la tres veces campeona del mundo Emma Snowsill que hoy ganó en el comienzo de la temporada de Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG en Mooloolaba. En la primera lucha mano a mano entre Snowsill y Vanesa Fernandes, fue la favorita local quien triunfó. Fernandes se tuvo que conformar con la plata, a 39 segundos. La campeona del mundo Sub 23 del año pasado Lisa Norden de Suecia hizo una increíble carrera a pié para llevarse el bronce, convirtiéndose en la primera sueca en subir al podium de la copa del mundo en la Historia de la ITU.

Snowsill y Fernandes estuvieron en el grupo de cabeza en todos los momentos de la natación y la bicicleta y corrieron codo con codo los primeros cinco kilómetros. Snowsill hizo su ataque en la tercera vuelta cuando ella incrementó el ritmo en la subida. Fernandes no respondió y dejo a Snowsill marcharse y conseguir de esta forma su séptimo título de la copa del mundo en su carrera y segundo consecutivo en Mooloolaba.

“La primera carrera de la temporada, la que sirve de arranque. Estoy tan feliz y me siento otra vez yo misma. Los problemas se han alejado. Parece que vuelvo a donde quiero estar,” dijo Snowsill en la línea de meta. “Todos siempre dicen que sería genial tener un codo a codo con Vanesa Fernandes., “Aquí está lo bueno. Yo lo iba a intentar y hasta matarme en un sprint final con Vanesa. La ayuda del público local es algo genial.”

Fernandes mientras tanto sólo intentó ver el lado bueno.

“El año pasado yo fui tercera y este año segunda. Por lo que es mejor,” dijo Fernandes, quien por primera vez fue segunda en una copa del mundo, a pesar de terminar anteriormente tercera en tres ocasiones. “Intenté ir primera en el inicio pero Emma [Snowsill] estaba muy fuerte y más rápida que yo. Me estaba sintiendo realmente bien las dos primeras vueltas pero creo que luego me vine abajo y ella se escapó.

Norden, quien se abrió camino el año pasado con una séptima posición en la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG de Rodas, derrotó a varias veteranas de la copa del mundo para lograr su primer podium en la copa del mundo.

“Esto era mucho más de lo que yo esperaba hoy. Sólo quise correr con las chicas más rápidas hoy. Sólo quise ver lo rápido que corren ellas.”

La sueca se convierte en la primera atleta del equipo BG en conseguir una medalla en la copa del mundo. El Programa de Desarrollo de Atletas de Élite proporciona el apoyo económico y de equipo a los atletas de Federaciones Nacionales en desarrollo.
“Realmente espero poder demostrar que hay muchos atletas talentosos que no tienen el apoyo. Hay mucho talento fuera que tenemos que cuidar.”

La Americana Laura Bennett finalizó cuarta mientras que la británica Andrea Whitcombe redondeó las cinco primeras posiciones. En una fascinante batalla entre las neozelandesas Andrea Hewitt y Nicky Samuels para la tercera y última plaza para el equipo Olímpico de Nueva Zelanda, en la que Hewitt salió vencedora. Aunque ella fue la mejor neozelandesa en cruzar la línea de meta en 14º posición ella no se clasificó entre las cinco mejores que era necesario para una selección automática y tendrá que esperar a que los seleccionadores tomen su decisión. Alee Sharp, que competía en su segunda copa del mundo, fue la segunda mejor australiana en séptimo lugar, superando a estrellas de la copa del mundo como Emma Moffatt que termino novena, Felicity Abram que terminó 12º, y Erin Densham que terminó 21º.
