Rina rocks New Zealand!!

Rina Hill of Australia has just won the final leg of the 2006 BG Triathlon World Cup on a tough day in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
Hill’s time of 2:03:18 was only 6 seconds faster then Anja Dittmer of Germany who was able to finish in second place. Rounding out the podium only a few steps behind was Laura Bennett of the United States.

“I haven’t had a win in seems like a decade,” said the thirty-seven year old mother of two, who has only raced three world cups in the past two years. “Every time I make a comeback I think, ‘Well how competitive am I going to be’. To come back and win is unbelievable.”

Hill has not been on top of the world cup podium since 2003, where she won the New York world cup. Since then she has only one second place in Edmonton, Canada in 2004.

Dittmer and Bennett battled in a sprint finish for the silver medal and valuable points as the close of the season brings with it a US$250,000 bonus pool for the final world cup standings. Both Dittmer and Bennett moved up in the year-end rankings with Dittmer finishing third and Bennett fourth.

“Anja and I had a little bet on the sprint finish”, stated Bennett, who grabbed her fourth bronze medal of the year. “She absolutely smoked me.”

“I will give her [Laura] a drink tonight because I won,” responded Dittmer. “I started to laugh just before the finish when I pulled ahead.”

Forty-six women from sixteen countries entered the Pacific Ocean this morning in heavy winds, which would plague the athletes all day, to start the fifteenth installment of the newly renamed 2006 BG Triathlon World Cup series. The chilly 16 degree water temperature would mean wetsuits allowed over the opening 1-lap, 1,500 metre swim. Despite the advantage of the wetsuits, choppy conditions broke the women into multiple distinct groups heading into the first transition.

“When I woke up this morning I thought, ‘This is going to be a tough day’ because of the wind, rain and cold, “commented Hill. “Triathlon is a tough sport.”

Annabel Luxford (AUS) and Sarah Haskins (USA) led out of the first transition and opened up a quick 15 second gap between themselves and the first chase group. Although growing at first, the gap was erased by the chase group that included Hill, Dittmer, Bennett, Emma Moffatt (AUS), Andrea Hewitt (NZL) and Ainhoa Murua (ESP).

After swallowing the two leaders the lead group put the hammer down to pull away from the chasers. Top contenders Samantha Warriner (NZL), Lauren Groves (CAN) and Andrea Whitcombe (GBR) were stuck in the chase pack and were out of contention heading into second transition over two minutes down.

Out onto the four-lap, 10 kilometre run course, it was Hill, Dittmer, Bennett and Moffatt who immediately pulled away from the rest of the group. By the 5 kilometre mark Moffatt had dropped off and it was down to three. Hill led the entire run leg and despite thoughts that she would tire out pulled away with 2 kilometres to go and easily took the win.

“I felt very good on the run,” commented Hill on her decision to stay in front. “I was listening to the other girl’s breathing and thought that I would test them a little. They didn’t respond.”

Moffatt was able to hang on to fourth position while Luxford was able to take fifth, finishing her first world cup since her early season injury.

La australiana Rina Hill acaba de ganar la última prueba de la Copa del Mundo BG de Triatlón 2006 en un día difícil en New Plymouth, Nueva Zelanda. El tiempo de Hill fue de 2:03:18 solo 6 segundos mejor que la alemana Anja Dittmer que terminó en segundo lugar. Completó el podium solo unos pasos detrás la estadounidense Laura Bennett.

“Tengo la sensación de que no he ganado en una década”, dijo esta madre de dos hijos con treinta y siete años que solamente a participado en 3 copas del mundo en los dos últimos años. “Cada vez que regreso a la competición pienso `Bueno… ¿hasta que punto seré competitiva?´. Volver de nuevo y ganar es increíble.”

Hill no estaba en lo más alto del podio de una copa del mundo desde el año 2003, cuando ganó la copa del mundo celebrada en Nueva York. Desde entonces solo tiene un segundo puesto en Edmonton, Canadá, en el año 2004.

Dittmer y Bennett, lucharon en un esprint final por la medalla de plata y los valiosos puntos de Copa del Mundo que se premian en el cierre de temporada con 250.000 dólares. Ambas, Dittmer y Bennett ha ascendido en las clasificaciones de final de año con Dittmer finalizando en tercera posición y Bennet en cuarta.

“Anja y yo teníamos una pequeña apuesta en el esprint final”, comentó Bennett, quien consiguió su cuarta medalla de bronce del año. “Me dio un buen repaso.”

“Le invitaré (a Laura) a un trago esta noche ya que he ganado”, respondió Dittmer. “Empecé a reírme justo antes de llegar a meta cuando le saqué ventaja.”

Cuarenta y seis mujeres de sesenta países se zambulleron en el Océano Pacífico esta mañana en medio de un fuerte viento, que castigaría a los atletas durante el resto del día, para dar comienzo al la decimoquinta prueba de la rebautizada Copa del Mundo BG de Triatlón 2006. Los fríos 16 grados de temperatura del agua significaron la autorización para utilizar trajes de neopreno durante los 1.500 metros de natación. A pesar de la ventaja de los trajes, la mar picada rompió la carrera en múltiples grupos de mujeres hasta la primera transición.

“Cuando me levanté esta mañana pensé, ‘Este va a ser un día duro’ debido al viento, la lluvia y el frío”, comentó Hill. “El triatlón es un deporte duro.”

Annabel Luxford (AUS) y Sarah Haskins (USA) lideraron la primera transición y dejaron un escaso margen de 15 segundos entre ellas y el primer pelotón. Pese a lo que se pensaba en un principio la diferencia fue enjugada por el pelotón perseguidor en el que estaban Hill, Dittmer, Bennett, Emma Moffatt (AUS), Andrea Hewitt (NZL) y Ainhoa Murua (ESP).

Después de alcanzar a las dos lideres el grupo en cabeza remató la faena escapandose de sus perseguidoras. . Favoritas como Warriner (NZL), Lauren Groves (CAN) y Andrea Whitcombe (GBR) se quedaron en el el pelotón de persecución y quedaron al margen de la lucha por la victoria al llegar con más de dos minutos de diferencia a la segunda transición.

Ya en la carrera a pié, que constaba de 4 vueltas para completar los 10 Km. fueron Hill, Dittmer, Bennett y Moffatt quienes se despegaron del resto del grupo. Al pasar la marca de los 5 Km. Moffat había ido cayendo hasta la tercera posición. Hill lideró por completo el resto de la carrera y pese a que todos pensaban que se agotaría continuó adelante los dos kilómetros restantes y se hizo fácilmente con la victoria.

“Me sentí muy cómoda durante la carrera”, comentó Hill acerca de su decisión de mantenerse al frente. “Estaba escuchando la respiración de las otras chicas y pensé que podría ponerlas a prueba un poco. Y no respondieron.”

Moffat logró mantener el cuarto puesto mientras que Luxford llegó en quinto lugar, terminando su primera copa del mundo después de su lesion a principios de esta temporada.
