Ide Thrills Home Crowd in Ishigaki

Juri Ide delighted the home crowd by winning round two of the 2009 ITU Triathlon World Cup Series today on the Japanese island of Ishigaki.  Leading for most of the race, Ide crossed the line in 2 hours 3 minutes and 33 seconds for her first career world cup victory.  Five seconds back in second was Canada’s Kathy Tremblay with another Japanese athlete, Kiyomi Niwata, rounding out the podium a further 16 seconds down.

A strong front pack formed during the two lap harbour swim including all of the pre-race favourites apart from Canada’s Lauren Groves who found herself 30 seconds adrift.

Despite repeated attempts by New Zealand’s Nicky Samuels to force the pace and break up the leaders, the front runners stayed in regulation throughout the 40km cycle and were eventually caught by Groves with just two laps of the bike course to navigate.

On the run Spain’s Ainhoa Murua went straight to the fore along with Tremblay and Japanese duo of Ide and Kiyomi Niwata. The four would battle each other for most of the 10km run before Ide stretched away on the final downhill taking Tremblay with her. In a repeat of last year’s race Ide was able to hold off the Canadian, but instead of duelling for fourth as they did in 2008, they found themselves racing for gold.

Ide crossed the line delighted with her performance whilst compatriot Niwata held off Murua for bronze completing an exceptional day for Japanese triathlon and the home support.

“I’m really happy to have won in Japan, but I’m especially happy that all of my friends, family and fans were here to see it and to share the experience,” commented Ide. “From start to finish I never felt like I was alone, the support was incredible and kept me going.”

“I felt pretty sick last night as I accidentally ate some shrimp which I’m allergic to, but I put that behind me today and focussed on putting in a good performance,” said Tremblay. “I started pretty steadily on the run just trying to stay relaxed. Juri and I managed to get ahead on the final lap but she kicked first and got the gold, I couldn’t quite react.”

“I am very happy to make the podium again in lovely Ishigaki, it was my fourteenth time racing here today and my third medal winning performance,” commented Niwata. “I had been training hard on the bike to cope with the hilly course here, and I feel it really worked out well.”

Jurie Ide deleitó al público local tras ganar la segunda prueba de las Series de la Copa del Mundo celebrada hoy en la japonesa isla de Ishigaki. Liderando la mayor parte de la carrera, Ide cruzó la meta en un tiempo de 2 horas, 3 minutos y 33 segundos para conseguir la primera victoria de su carrera en la copa del mundo. A cinco segundos llegó la canadiense Kathy Tremblay y el pódium lo redondeó la japonesa Kiyomi Niwata a otros 16 segundos.

Durante las dos vueltas de la natación en el puerto se formó un grupo fuerte en el que estaban todas las favoritas a priori, excepto la canadiense Lauren Groves quien tenía una desventaja de 30 segundos. 

A pesar de los reiterados intentos de la neozelandesa Nicky Samuels de poner el ritmo y dividir la cabeza, los corredores de cabeza se regularon durante los 40 km de la bicicleta y fueron finalmente alcanzados por Groves a tan sólo dos vueltas del final del recorrido de la bicicleta.

En la carrera a pie, la española Ainhoa Murua saltó a la cabeza junto con Tremblay y el dúo de japonesas Ide y Kiyomi Niwata. Las cuatro lucharían juntas la mayor parte de los 10 km de carrera a pie, hasta que Ide atacó en la última bajada saliendo Tremblay junto con ella. En una repetición de la carrera del año pasado Ide fue capaz de mantener atrás a la canadiense, pero en lugar de por la lucha del cuarto puesto como en 2008, ahora se vieron en la lucha por el oro.

Ide cruzó la línea de meta encantada con su actuación, mientras que su compatriota Niwata superó a Murua en la lucha por el bronce, completando un día excepcional para el triatlón japonés y la afición local.

“Estoy muy contenta por haber ganado en Japón, pero sobre todo por todos mis amigos, familiares y aficionados que han estado aquí para ver y compartir la experiencia,” comentó Ide. “Desde el principio hasta el final nunca me sentí sola, el apoyo fue increíble y me hizo seguir adelante.”

“Pase una noche bastante enferma tras comerme anoche sin darme cuenta unos langostinos a los que soy alérgica, pero no he pensado en ello y me he centrado en hacer una buena carrera,” dijo Tremblay. “Empecé con un ritmo constante en la carrera a pie para sentirme relajada. Juri y yo conseguimos ponernos en cabeza en la última vuelta pero ella atacó primero y no pude reaccionar lo suficiente, así que ella logró el oro.”

“Estoy muy feliz de conseguir pódium aquí en la encantadora Ishigaki, hoy ha sido la cuarta vez que compito aquí y mi tercera medalla ganada,” comentó Niwata. “He estado entrenando duro sobre la bicicleta para hacer frente a las pendientes del recorrido, y creo que he trabajado bien.”
