Gold Coast Review - with TV times

Emma Moffatt continued her push for Olympic selection on the Australian triathlon team with a win today at the Gold Coast ITU Triathlon Oceania Cup. The win comes off the back of a breakthrough victory at the Australian Sprint Championships just two weeks ago.

Moffatt, 23, now considered a front runner for one of the two remaining places on the team to join pre-selected triple world champion Emma Snowsill.

“I couldn’t be happier with my form at the start of the season and the win here is another good preparation ahead of the first world cup race at Mooloolaba,” said Moffatt.

This is the first race Abram has contested since finishing second to Snowsill at the Noosa Triathlon back in November and she was pleased with her performance.

“It was a good hit out for me as I work towards peaking at Mooloolaba where I need to put in a really good performance. Beijing is in the back of my mind and I just need to focus on one thing at a time though,” said Abram.

After the opening 1.5-kilometer swim leg, a group of ten athletes formed early on the bike, including all the top contenders, Abram and Moffatt, Ireland’s Emma Davis, 2008 Australian Champion Alee Sharp, Japanese pair Chie Nakashima and Keiko Tanaka, also Lisa Mensink who eventually withdrew in the early stages of the run. The large group was able to work together over the flat 9-lap, 40-kilometer bike to build almost an unassailable gap on the rest of the field headed by Canada’s Carolyn Murray.

The four lap 10-kilometer run course proved a scorcher as the temperature and the tempo of the race rose. The transition proved crucial with a small group taking charge. At the end of the first lap Moffatt secured the lead and the field was strung out. Abram sat comfortably in second with Davis have a sensational race in third. The placings remained unchanged and Moffatt looked in total control cruising to a second victory in two weeks.

Murray made up over a 2-minute deficit after the bike leg to run through to fourth place.

“We all worked well on the bike to establish the first group and there was no point in trying to make a break, it was pretty windy out there. I knew I just had to control it on the run,” said Moffatt.

Focus will now turn to the first BG Triathlon World Cup of the year at Mooloolaba (30 March), the first race selectors will use in determining the final three places (2 female, one male) to join Snowsill, Brad Kahlefeldt and Courtney Atkinson in Beijing.

This event is part of the Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial weekend and also doubles as the venue for next year’s ITU Triathlon World Championships on 13 September 2009.

Australia’s Brad Kahlefeldt made a winning return to racing today with a victory in the 2008 Gold Coast ITU Triathlon Oceania Cup ahead of Great Britain’s Stuart Hayes and German Maik Petzold over the 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run as he begins his quest for gold in Beijing.

Kahlefeldt had not raced since the Beijing test event back in September when he placed 8th and declared this a good start to his Olympic campaign.

“I’m really fit at the moment, but it was still good to get this win and confirm my complete recovery from the pneumonia. My lung is fully functional which should silence some critics who thought I couldn’t come back from it,” said Kahlefeldt.

Kahlefeldt’s time of 1 hour 46 minutes and 59 seconds elated the large crowds gathered to cheer on their local athletes.

The two-lap swim course was unable to separate a large group of men at the end of the 1.5-kilometer swim. First to emerge were Queenslanders Bryce Mcmaster and Josh Amberger in just over 17 minutes from Petzold a former winner of this event along with Richard Stannard (GBR), Marko Albert (EST), Josh Maider and James Seear.

Kahlefeldt exited the water 15 seconds back of the leaders and missed the lead bunch. A group of six formed the front pack in the opening stages of the 9-lap bike leg but by lap 3 the two groups merged and worked together to keep the chase pack away. At the change over the group had reduced to just eight athletes.

Quickly to the front of the run went Kahlefeldt, who had a lightening fast transition. Hayes, Petzold, Albert, Stannard and Seears who was having the race of his life followed in quick succession.

Kahlefeldt was the first to make a move, going to the front on the first of four laps but Hayes moved up to run with him for the next two laps. The pair extended their lead from Petzold in third. But on the final lap Kahlefeldt just cleared out to leave Hayes a distant second. Petzold was suffering but still managed to hang on for the final podium place as Albert ran out of real estate to catch him.
Seear had a brilliant race among a strong international field to finish fifth.

“I just controlled it in the first two laps of the run, I’m in full training and not tapered at all,” said Kahlefeldt. “I’m at the top of my game at the moment and it always seems easier when you’re out in front.”
Kahlefeldt will now turn his full attention to the defence of his BG Triathlon World Cup title in Mooloolaba (30 March).

Emma Moffatt continúa la lucha para la selección Olímpica en el equipo Australiano de Triatlón con una victoria hoy en la Copa de Oceanía de Triatlón ITU Gold Coast. La victoria viene tras haber conseguido el Campeonato Sprint Australiano hace dos semanas.
Moffatt, de 23 años, está en cabeza para cubrir una de las dos plazas restantes en el equipo y estar junto a la triple campeona del mundo Emma Snowsill.

“Yo no puedo estar más feliz con mi estado de forma al inicio de la temporada y la Victoria aquí es otra buena buena preparación antes de la primera carrera de la copa del mundo en Mooloolaba,” dijo Moffatt.

Esta es la primera carrera de Abram desde que terminó segunda tras Snowsill en el Triatlón de Noosa el pasado noviembre y estaba contenta con su actuación.

“Ha sido una buena puesta a punto para mí, ya que trabajo para alcanzar mi mejor forma en Mooloolaba donde tengo que tener una actuación realmente buena. Beijing está en el fondo de mi mente y sólo tengo que centrarme en una cosa,” dijo Abram.

Tras el kilómetro y medio del segmento de la natación, se formó un grupo de diez atletas en la bicicleta, en el que estaban todas las favoritas, Abram y Moffatt, la irlandesa Emma Davis, la Campeona Australiana Alee Sharp, la pareja japonesa Chie Nakashima y Keiko Tanaka, así como Lisa Mensink quien finalmente se retiró en los primeros compases de la carrera. El gran grupo fue capaz de trabajar junto las 9 vueltas del llano recorrido de 40 kilómetros en bicicleta para conseguir una ventaja casi inalcanzable para el resto de participantes encabezadas por la canadiense Carolyn Murray.

Las cuatro vueltas del recorrido de carrera a pie de 10 kilómetros demostraron como la temperatura y el ritmo de la carrera se elevaba. La transición resultó crucial con un pequeño grupo al cargo. Al final de la primera vuelta Moffatt aseguró su ventaja y el resto de participantes se pusieron nerviosos. Abran se puso cómodamente en segunda posición con Davis que tuvo una sensacional carrera en tercera posición. Las posiciones permanecieron sin cambios y Moffatt cruzó la meta consiguiendo su segunda victoria en dos semanas.

Murray redujo su desventaja de dos minutos tras el segmento de la bicicleta cruzando en cuarto lugar.

La atención ahora pasará a la primera Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG del año en Mooloolaba (30 de Marzo), la primera carrera que los seleccionadores utilizarán para determinar las tres últimas plazas (2 femeninas y una masculina) que se unirán a Snowsill, Brad Kahlefeldt y Courtney Atkinson en Beijing.

Esta prueba es parte del Triatlón Gold Coast – del Memorial de fin de semana Luke Harrop y también el lugar de los próximos Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatlón ITU del 13 de Septiembre de 2009.

El australiano Brad Kahlefeldt consiguió el triunfo en su vuelta hoy a las carreras con la victoria el la Copa de Oceanía de Triatlón ITU Gold Coast 2008 por delante del británico Stuart Hayes y del alemán Maik Petzold, sobre el 1.5 de natación, 40 km bicicleta y 10 km de carrera a pie y comienza así su búsqueda del oro en Beijing.

Kahlefeldt no había corridor desde la prueba test de Beijing el pasado Septiembre cuando consiguió la 8º plaza y declaró que era un buen comienzo para su campaña Olímpica.

“Estoy realmente en Buena forma en este momento, pero era todavía mejor conseguir este triunfo y confirmar mi completa recuperación de la pulmonía. Mi pulmón funciona correctamente lo cual debería acallar a algunos críticos quienes pensaron que yo no regresaría tras esa enfermedad,” dijo Kahlefeldt.

El tiempo de Kahlefeldt de 1 hora 46 minutos y 59 segundos animó a los aficionados que se dieron cita para animar a sus atletas locales.

Las dos vueltas del recorrido de natación fue incapaz de separar el gran grupo de hombres al final del kilómetro y medio de la natación. Los primeros en salir fueron Bryce Mcmaster y Josh Amberger en tan sólo 17 minutos, seguidos de Petzold, un antiguo ganador de la prueba junto con Richard Standard (GBR), Marko Albert (EST), Josh Maider y James Seear.

Kahlefeldt salió del agua a 15 segundos de los líderes y perdió al grupo de cabeza. Un grupo de seis formaron el paquete de cabeza en las primeras fases de las 9 vueltas del segmento de la bicicleta pero por la vuelta tres los dos grupos se unieron y trabajaron juntos para mantener lejos el grupo perseguidor. Con el cambio el grupo se había reducido sólo a ocho atletas.

Rápidamente al frente de la carrera a pie se situó Kahlefeldt, que tuvo una rápida transición. Hayes, Petzold, Albert, Standard y Seears quienes estaban haciendo la carrera de su vida seguían a continuación.

Kahlefeldt fue el primero en lanzar un ataque, situándose en cabeza en la primera de las cuatro vueltas pero Hayes se colocó junto a él en las dos siguientes vueltas. La pareja aumentó su ventaja sobre Petzold que estaba tercero. Pero en la última vuelta Kahlefeldt decidió dejar a Hayes atrás. Petzold sufría pero todavía mantenía una plaza en el podium ya que Albert se quedó sin fuerzas para atraparle.
Seear hizo una brillante carrera entre grandes corredores internacionales finalizando quinto.

“Sólo lo controlé en las dos primeras vueltas de la carrera a pie, estoy a tope de entrenamientos y no apuré en absoluto,” dijo Kahlefeldt. “Estoy en lo más alto en este momento y siempre parece más fácil cuando estas en cabeza.”

Kahlefeldt se centrará ahora en defender su título en la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG Mooloolaba (30 de Marzo)
