Germans deliver in Hamburg

In what seemed like an instant replay from one year ago, hometown favourite Daniel Unger of Germany has won the 2008 Hamburg BG Triathlon World Cup in a time of one hour 46 minutes and 51 seconds.  With only 200 metres to go, the Beijing-bound Unger managed to catch and pass teammate Jan Frodeno to win by a mere six seconds and put Germany one-two on the podium.  Oliver Freeman of Great Britain rounded out the podium in third, a further seven seconds back.

“It was deja vu,” said the 2007 world champion Unger. “It was a perfect race for me.  It was tough as the speed was very high even though the top guys weren’t here.  It was a good test for Beijing.”

With his second world cup win of the season, in only his second race, Unger shows he is a definite medal contender in Beijing.  The entire German Olympic team showed their muscle today with Unger first, Frodeno second and Christian Prochnow in fifth.  In total Germany had five athletes in the top eight.

Thirty-five men would start the sixth edition of the Hamburg event with Russian Ivan Vasiliev moving to the lead early in the swim on with a group of 12 athletes, four of them Germans, in quick pursuit.  With many young and inexperienced athletes in the field the race quickly split into numerous small groups early on the bike.  This gave the front thirteen the chance to put significant time on the chasers including top contender Brad Kahlefeldt of Australia, which grew to over 80 seconds by the end of the bike. 

On the sixth of eight laps Prochnow and relative world cup newcomer Gareth Halverson from Australia would take advantage of the flat and technical course through downtown Hamburg to break away from the front group, giving them a 33 second buffer heading into the 10-kilometre run course. 

Halverson quickly dropped off the run pace and was swallowed by the chase group before the end of the first lap.  From here it was only a matter of time as Unger, Frodeno and Freeman ran shoulder to shoulder, catching Prochnow at the five kilometre mark. From here it would be a battle for gold, each taking their turn in the lead until with 800m to go, Frodeno kicked into an early sprint clearing 25 metres on the other two.  But just as at the 2007 BG Triathlon World Championships, Unger would time his response perfectly, and just as he caught Javier Gomez of Spain with 200m to go a year ago, Unger caught Frodeno and then cruised home to the cheers of thousands of elated German fans to take his second world cup win of his career.

En lo que parecía una repetición del año pasado, el favorito local Daniel Unger de Alemania ha ganado la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG de Hamburgo 2008 con un tiempo de una hora 46 minutos y 51 segundos. A tan sólo 200 metros para la meta, Unger que estará en Beijing, logró atrapar y superar a su compañero de equipo Jan Frodeno para ganar con sólo seis segundos y conseguir para Alemania la primera y la segunda plaza del podium. Oliver Freeman de Gran Bretaña redondeó el podium en tercera posición, a otros siete segundos.

“Algo que se repite” dijo el campeón del mundo del 2007 Unger. “Ha sido una carrera perfecta para mí. Fue una carrera muy dura, el ritmo de carrera fue muy alto, a pesar de que los mejores no estuviesen aquí. Ha sido una buena prueba para Beijing.”

Tras se segunda victoria en la copa del mundo de la temporada, en tan sólo dos carreras, Unger se muestra con un firme candidato a medalla en Beijing. El equipo Olímpico alemán completo ha mostrado su potencial hoy con Unger primero, Frodeno segundo y Christian Prochnow quinto. En total Alemania ha tenido cinco atletas entre los ocho mejores.

Treinta y cinco hombres tomaron la salida de la sexta edición de la prueba de Hamburgo con el ruso Ivan Vasiliev situándose en cabeza seguido muy de cerca por un grupo de 12 atletas, cuatro de ellos alemanes. Con muchos atletas jóvenes e inexpertos la carrera quedó rápidamente dividida en muchos pequeños grupos en el segmento de la bicicleta. Esto dio al grupo de trece la posibilidad de poner un tiempo significativo sobre los perseguidores entre los que estaba el principal favorito, el australiano Brad Kahlefeldt, cuya desventaja aumentó hasta los 80 segundos al finalizar el segmento de la bicicleta. 

En la sexta de las ocho vueltas Prochnow y el entre comillas recién llegado a la copa del mundo el australiano Gareth Halverson tomarían ventaja sobre el llano y técnico recorrido a través del centro de Hamburgo para separarse del grupo de cabeza, dándoles un colchón de ventaja de 33 segundos en los 10 kilómetros del segmento de carrera.

Halverson rápidamente disminuyó el ritmo de carrera y fue absorbido por el grupo perseguidor antes de finalizar la primera vuelta. A partir de este momento sólo era cuestión de tiempo que Unger, Frodeno y Freeman corriendo codo con codo atrapasen a Prochnow en la marca de los cinco quilómetros. Desde aquí sería la batalla por el oro, turnándose en la cabeza hasta los últimos 800 metros, cuando Frodeno aceleró muy pronto para un sprint que resolvió sacando 25 metros a los otros dos. Pero tal y como sucedió en los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatlón BG 2007, Unger respondería a tiempo, y como diese caza el año pasado al español Javier Gómez a 200 metros de la meta, Unger atrapó a Frodeno y luego cruzó  la línea de meta para la alegría de miles de aficionados alemanes eufóricos y de esta manera conseguir su segunda victoria en la copa del mundo de su carrera.
