European Cup Final in Alanya

The 17th edition of the Alanya Triathlon – ITU Premium European Cup Triathlon welcomed the athletes from all over Europe. Yuliya Yelistratova of the Ukraine and Ioulian Malyshev from Russia won the prestigious event. After the rainy and cool weather a few days ago, this beautiful Turkish resort showed the usual face for the race day.
After the ETU Junior European Cup, where Emmie Charayron from France and Viktor Aloshyn from the Ukraine won the event, the elite men lined up on the start line. Almost 80 athletes were ready to run into the 24C degree sea for the one lap point-to-point swim. The Frenchmen, Louis Vincent was the first out of the water with his team-mate Aurelian Raphael on his heels, but most of the athletes exited within 30 seconds.
On the early kilometers of the bike, the lead group grew in the front with over four athletes in it. There were several breakaway attempts, but all of them were eliminated except the one with Zvonko Cubric from Croatia and Bertrand Billard from France. They entered the transition in the lead with 30 seconds in front of the main pack. A group of five athletes started to chase Cubric and they caught him in the second lap.
From this group Malyshev was the freshest and made a brave move to the lead halfway through the run. Nobody in the field responded and he managed to win the race with an impressive time of 1:47:29. Andrey Glouschenko from the Ukraine finished second and the young Swiss, Ruedi Wild came third. As this was the last race of the season, the overall winner of the ranking became Igor Sysoev from Russia, Glouschenko finished second there as well and Malyshev finished the season in third position in the ETU Rankings.
Immediately after the men’s race, the women started. Emma Davis representing ITU (in transition from Great Britain to Ireland) was the first out of the water. She was in the lead alone for the first five kilometers of the bike, but then a group of 12 athletes caught her. This lead group was working together, but not well enough for the three groups to catch them in the last lap of the 4-lap course after “eating” the second group. Over 30 athletes entered the second transition, where Yuliya Yelistratova from the Ukraine was the fastest. She was closely followed by the pre-race favorite Lenka Zemanova. The lead group of six athletes was running in the front including Deniz Dimaki from Greece, Kaisa Lehtonen of Finland (both trying to get the “European new-flag” qualifying position for Beijing 2008). Yelistratova made a second move on the race in the third run lap and from there she managed to stay in front for the rest of the race. Dimaki had a great race and a made a big move toward Beijing finishing second and Sarah Schutz representing Switzerland came third. The European overall title went to Zemanova, followed by Dimaki and Birgit Berk from the Netherlands.

La 17º edición del Triatlón de Alanya – Copa de Europa de Triatlón Premium ITU dio la bienvenida a los atletas llegados de todas las partes de Europa. Yuliya Yelistratova de Ucrania y Ioulian Malyshev de Rusia han ganado esta prestigiosa prueba. Tras unos días atrás con un tiempo fresco y lluvioso, este hermoso lugar de vacaciones turco mostró su cara más habitual para el día de la carrera.
Tras la Copa Europea ETU Junior, en donde Emmie Charayron de Francia y Viktor Aloshyn de Ucrania ganaron la prueba, los atletas de la categoría masculina se situaron en la línea de salida.
Casi 80 atletas estaban preparados para lanzarse al mar con una temperatura de 24C para realizar una vuelta de boya a boya a nado. El francés, Louis Vincent fue el primero tras la salida del agua seguido de su compañero de equipo Aurelian Raphael pisándole los talones, pero la mayoría de los atletas salieron del agua a más de 30 segundos.
En los primeros kilómetros del segmento de la bicicleta, el grupo líder se incrementó a cuatro atletas. Se produjeron varios intentos de ruptura, pero todas ellas se vinieron abajo a excepción de una con Zvonko Cubric de Croacia y Bertrand Billard de Francia.
De este grupo Malyshev era el más fresco e hizo un ataque valiente para liderar la carrera en el punto intermedio. Nadie respondió y logró ganar la carrera con un tiempo impresionante de 1:47:29. Andrey Glouschenko de Ucrania finalizó en segunda posición y el joven suizo, Ruedi Wild terminó tercero. Como esta era la última carrera de la temporada, el ganador de la clasificación general es Igor Sysoev de Rusia, Glouschenko terminó segundo aquí también y Malyshev terminó la temporada en tercera posición en la Clasificación ETU.
Inmediatamente tras la carrera masculina, comenzaron las mujeres. Emma Davis representando a la ITU (en transición de Gran Bretaña a Irlanda) fue la primera tras la salida del agua. Ella estuvo en solitario en cabeza los primeros cinco kilómetros del segmento de la bicicleta, pero luego sería atrapada por un grupo de 12 atletas. Este grupo líder estuvo trabajando junto, pero no lo suficientemente bien ya que el tercer grupo les atraparía en la última de las cuatro vueltas después de “comerse” al segundo grupo. Más de 30 atletas entraron en la segunda transición, en donde Yuliya Yelistratova de Ucrania era la más rápida. Ella era seguida estrechamente por la favorita a priori Lenka Zemanova. El grupo líder formado por seis atletas estuvo corriendo al frente en el que también estaban Deniz dimaki de Grecia, Kaisa Lehtonen de Finlandia (ambas buscando ganar el puesto de “nueva bandera de Europa” que clasifica para los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing 2008). Yelistratova hizo un segundo ataque en la tercera vuelta del segmento de la carrera y desde ese momento ella se colocó en cabeza para el resto de la carrera. Dimiaki hizo una gran carrera y ha hecho un gran avance para poder estar en Beijing terminando en segunda posición y Sarah Schutz representando a Suiza llegço en tercer lugar. El título europeo general fue para Zemanova seguida por Dimaki y Birgit Berk de Holanda.
