Craig Walton Retires

After 17 years on the world triathlon stage, one of Australia’s greatest has decided to call it a career. Craig Walton, a proud Tasmanian but who now resides on the Gold Coast, admits the decision was tough to make at first, but he now has no regrets.

“I have had a long career and certainly my fair share of highs and lows, but as a lot of retired Sports people say, you instinctively know when it is time to retire and while I still enjoy training and staying fit and active, I have simply lost the desire to race,” said Walton. “Our sport is unforgiving and if you let your guard down slightly you will not succeed. I have always raced to win, and anything less, I am not happy with, and considering I am not 100 percent committed, it is best that I walk away and focus on a new chapter of my life”.

Walton is regarded as one the best triathletes on the world stage, thanks largely to his dynamic swimming and bike leg combinations, which allowed him to break the back of triathlon’s biggest names.

Walton began his elite career back in 1993 and until his medically enforced layoff due to chronic fatigue and then glandular fever three years ago, he was firmly entrenched at the front of the field in any race he entered. The Aussie star has won six world cups which ranks him in a tie for eighth place all-time. He’s also won many National titles in both the sprint, Olympic distance and long course formats, and made the Noosa Triathlon his own, winning it six times. But his highest honour was undoubtedly representing Australia at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

“To lead that race in Sydney for as long as I did, to have the thousands of fans cheering you on, is something I will never forget, there is no greater honour than flying the flag for Australia, it was a proud moment for me for sure,” recalls Walton.

“My heartfelt thanks goes out to all my sponsors, they made it possible for me to have the career I’ve had, and my sincere thanks goes out to them and to the media for their support.”

Walton made the world cup podium 12 times in his career, winning six times. He is one of only six men to win at least one world cup title in four consecutive years. Walton won bronze at the 2000 ITU Triathlon World Championships in Perth, Australia and finished 27th at the Sydney Olympics that same year.

Despite retiring, the lanky Tasmanian will have plenty to keep him busy; his main priority will be to continue coaching his partner Emma Snowsill, as she prepares for the Beijing Olympics.

“Emma has a great chance in Beijing to medal and I want to help her have the best preparation possible to achieve her dreams and goals, and now that I don’t have the added pressure on me of trying to focus on my racing as well, I can turn my attention to Emma’s preparation full-time.”

Tras 17 años en el mundo del triatlón, uno de los mejores triatletas australianos ha decididito decir adiós a su carrera. Craig Walton, un orgulloso tasmanio pero que ahora reside en Gold Coast, admite que la decisión fue dura en un primer momento, pero que no tiene marcha atrás.

“He tenido una larga carrera y ciertamente con sus correspondientes altibajos, pero como muchos deportistas retirados dicen, tú sabes inconscientemente cuando es hora de retirarse y mientras que todavía disfruto entrenando y estando en forma y en activo, por el contrario he perdido el deseo de correr,” dijo Walton. “Nuestro deporte no perdona y si tu bajas la guardia ligeramente no tendrás éxito. Yo siempre he corrido para ganar y sino es así no estoy feliz. Considero que no estoy comprometido al 100%, por lo que lo mejor es que lo deje y me centre en un nuevo capítulo en mi vida”

Walter está considerado como uno de los mejores triatletas de todo el mundo, gracias en sobre todo a la combinación de su natación dinámica con ciclismo que le permitió mantenerse junto a los más grandes nombres del triatlón.

Walton comenzó su carrera en 1993 y hasta su retirada forzosa por razones médicas, debido a su fatiga crónica y a su mononucleosis detectada hace tres años, él estaba entre los máximos favoritos en cada carrera que participaba. La estrella australiana ha ganado seis copas del mundo lo cual le sitúa empatado en el octavo puesto en el ranking de todos los tiempos. También ha ganado muchos títulos nacionales tanto en distancia sprint, Olímpica como en larga distancia e hizo del triatlón de Noosa como algo de su propiedad al ganarlo en seis ocasiones. Pero su honor más grande fue indudablemente representar a Australia en las Olimpiadas de Sydney en el 2000.

“Liderar la carrera de Sydney durante tanto tiempo como hice, teniendo a los miles de aficionados animándome, es algo que nunca olvidaré, no hay honor mayor que ondear la bandera de Australia, fue seguramente el momento del que estoy más orgulloso,” recuerda Walton.

“Doy mil gracias de verdad a todos mis patrocinadores, ellos han hecho posible que yo tenga la carrera que he tenido, y mis más sinceras gracias para ellos y para todos los medios de comunicación por su apoyo.”

Walton hizo podium en la copa del mundo 12 veces en su carrera, ganando en seis ocasiones. Él es uno de los seis únicos hombres en ganar al menos un título de la copa del mundo en cuatro años consecutivos. Walton ganó el bronce en los Campeonatos del Mundo ITU de Triatlón en el 2000 en Perth, Australia y finalizó el 27º en las Olimpiadas de Sydney ese mismo año.

A pesar de su retirada, el desgarbado tasmanio tendrá muchas opciones de mantenerse ocupado, aunque su prioridad será seguir entrenando a su pareja Emma Snowsill, en su preparación para las Olimpiadas de Beijing.

“Emma tiene grandes posibilidades de medalla en Beijing y quiero ayudarla a conseguir la mejor preparación posible para alcanzar sus sueños y objetivos, y sobre todo ahora que yo no tengo sobre mi la presión añadida de centrarme también en mis carreras y que puedo centrarme en la preparación de Emma todo el tiempo.”
