Clarke, Avil British Champs

Beijing bound Will Clarke and Hollie Avil both took gold at the Corus Elite Series triathlon in Bryn Bach Park, Wales, to be crowned as the British Champions just days before flying to the Team GB pre-Olympic camp in South Korea.

Clarke battled throughout the 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run with fellow Team GB members Tim Don and Alistair Brownlee, but managed to hold them, and Stuart Hayes, off to take the win. In a competitive race the athletes showed good form following a heavy training block leading into the Olympic Games.

Clarke said on taking the win:
“I can’t believe it, I felt so good out there. I just can’t wait to go to Beijing now, its going to be great. I’ve put in the biggest block of training and was killing myself with the Great Britain warm weather training camp in Spain last week so it’s good to race so well when I’m this tired. I just can’t believe it.”

Tim Don said:
“I decided to take the first four kilometres of the run easy and build into it; I didn’t want to go flat out from the start as that takes a lot out of you and I’ve got to fly to Korea in a couple of days time. I wanted to win, but left my charge a bit late and Will was awesome.”

In the women’s race, eighteen year old Hollie Avil looked impressive as she tore through the swim and bike before accelerating away in the 5km of the run to win her first British senior title ahead of Liz Blatchford and Andrea Whitcombe.

Avil said on her win:
“I didn’t go out there thinking I needed to win today as I’ve come off a large block of training; so this caps off an excellent week. I wanted to make it hard on the bike as it’s going to be similar in Beijing in just a few weeks time.

“I’ve still got to do all my packing and make sure I don’t forget anything, but I’m really looking forward to China and getting on that plane.”

Avil is the 2007 Junior European and World Triathlon Champion and sealed her Olympic Games selection following a fourth place finish at the Madrid BG Triathlon World Cup in May.

The athletes now fly to the Korean island of Jeju on Monday ahead of the Olympic Games. The team will fly into Beijing four days before the competition which is held at Shisanling Reservoir, just north of the city, on 18 and 19 August.

Los clasificados para Beijing Will Clarke y Hollie Avil se hicieron con el oro en las Series Corus Elite de Triatlón en Bryn Bach Park, Wales, y de esta forma se coronaron como los Campeones Británicos a tan sólo unos días de que el Equipo Pre-Olímpico de Gran Bretaña viaje a la concentración en Corea del Sur.

Clarke luchó durante los 1500m de la natación, los 40km de la bicicleta y 10km de la carrera a pie junto con otros miembros del Equipo de Gran Bretaña como Tim Don y Alistair Brownlee, pero se mantuvo con ellos y con Stuart Hayes, para llevarse la victoria. En una carrera competitiva los atletas mostraron un buen estado de forma tras un duro entrenamiento en su preparación para los Juegos Olímpicos.

Clarke comentó sobre la victoria:
“No puedo creerlo, me encontré tan bien. Ahora estoy impaciente por ir a Beijing, va a ser algo grande. En la calurosa concentración que tuvimos en España con el Equipo de Gran Bretaña la semana pasada puse la mayor intensidad de entrenamiento y eso me pasó factura, por lo que es bueno correr tan bien cuando estaba tan cansado. No puedo creérmelo.”

Tim Don dijo:
“Decidí hacer con facilidad los cuatro primeros kilómetros de carrera e ir metiéndome en ella; no quise ir demasiado rápido desde el inicio ya que requiere mucho desgaste y tengo que volar a Corea en un par de días. Quise ganar, pero ataqué demasiado tarde y Will estuvo imponente.

En la carrera femenina, Hollie Avil de dieciocho años de edad se mostró impresionante haciendo un gran desgaste en la natación y la bicicleta antes de acelerar en el kilómetro 5 de la carrera a pie para conseguir su primer título señor Británico por delante de Liz Blatchford y Andrea Whitcombe.
Avil comentó sobre su triunfo:
“No fui pensando en la necesidad de ganar hoy ya que venía de un periodo de duro entrenamiento; por lo que esto cierra una semana excelente. Quise endurecer la carrera en la bicicleta ya que es similar a la que nos encontraremos en Beijing en pocas semanas.

Avil es la Campeona de Europa y del Mundo de Triatlón Junior del 2007 y selló su selección para los Juegos Olímpico con una cuarta posición en la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG de Madrid en Mayo.

Los atletas vuelan el lunes a la isla Coreana de Jeju para dirigirse a los Juegos Olímpicos. El equipo volará a Beijing cuatro días antes de la competición la cual tendrá lugar en el embalse de Shisanling, justo al norte de la ciudad, el 18 y 19 de Agosto.
