AUS and NZL on top in Oceania

Blustery but warm conditions greeted triathletes in the OCA Triathlon Oceania Championships in Wellington, New Zealand today where Australia’s Emma Moffatt and Shane Reed of New Zealand won the elite women’s and men’s races respectively. Their wins give Australia and New Zealand a coveted spot on the start line of this summer’s Olympic Triathlon in Beijing.

Moffatt was hugely impressive and looked like she could run another ten kilometres when she crossed the line almost two minutes clear of her countrywoman and silver medalist Annabel Luxford. A further two minutes back was New Zealand’s Nicky Samuels in third.

The two Aussie’s dominated the majority of the race exiting the water in the lead and pulling away on the bike with Kiwi Andrea Hewitt before Moffatt took command early on the run. Hewitt was unable to hang on to the pace, however, and was eventually passed by Samuels.

Moffatt though was delighted with her days work in the trying conditions.

“That was bloody windy and tough the whole race but it was a good race, I felt great the whole day. My transition out of the bike and on to the run was great and from then I just ran solid and established what proved to be a winning lead. I have not tapered for this, I raced last week as well but the real aim is Mooloolaba in three weeks.”

In contrast Luxford crossed the line suffering from a shin injury and immediately sought ice to soothe the pain and inflammation.

“The wind made that so tough today. I swam well and led into transition but lost some time as a shoe had fallen off my bike. I had to work hard early on to get back on the lead bunch. From there we worked well together but from the moment I hit the run I was feeling the shin and struggled for the most part. The injury has flared up in the last week or so, I’m just glad to have this race out of the way and I will look to sort it out when I get home.”

The victory gives at least one Olympic spot to Australia but it does not guarantee that spot will go to Moffatt. Selection to Australia’s Olympic team is discretionary. Moffatt’s win coupled with the high rankings of Luxford, Emma Snowsill and Felicity Abram means Australia is likely to field a full women’s team of three in Beijing.

In the men’s event, the story would be whether Australia could come away with a victory and claim a third Olympic spot. The traditional triathlon powerhouse is on the bubble and is currently in a position to only send two athletes to Beijing. Their chances were further hampered by the withdrawal of top contenders Craig Walton and Peter Robertson, who did not start the race.

That would leave the door open for Reed to take the win with team mate Bevan Docherty taking silver. Young James Seear of Australia had a strong race for third.

It was an emotional win for Reed.

“My grandfather passed away this week and the funeral was on Friday, but I’m sure he was up there watching over me today, I was very much racing for him today. I felt strong all day and I’m delighted obviously to win and also to book New Zealand a third spot at Beijing. I just hope I haven’t peaked too early because I know have it all to do again in Mooloolaba in three weeks. I guess I just have to go there and win again.”

A group of 15 athletes exited the water close together and headed out in the heavy winds for the 40-kilometre bike. It was a class Trans-Tasman battle with the numbers split about even between the two nations.

Off the bike it quickly became evident it was a day for the more experienced and strong athletes with the wind buffeting the athletes around the picturesque Oriental Bay course with Kiwis Docherty, Reed and Kris Gemmell leading the way.

Out onto the run course Docherty was the first to surge with only Reed responding and eventually running clear to the adulation of the large pro-Kiwi crowd and the welcoming arms of his wife and young boy.

In winning Reed has secured a starting spot at the Beijing Olympics for New Zealand but knows he still has work to do to earn a start himself. The final New Zealand qualifier is the Mooloolaba BG Triathlon World Cup on March 30th. The first New Zealand man and women across the line are eligible for nomination.

Condiciones climatológicas tormentosas pero cálidas dieron la bienvenida a los triatletas en los Campeonatos de Oceanía de Triatlón OCA en Wellington, Nueva Zelanda, en donde la australiana Emma Moffatt y Shane Reed de Nueva Zelanda ganaron las carreras élite femenina y élite masculina respectivamente. Sus victorias dan a Australia y Nueva Zelanda una codiciada plaza en la línea de salida del Triatlón Olímpico de este verano en Beijing.

Moffatt estuvo impresionante y parecía que podía correr otros 10 kilómetros cuando la línea de meta con casi dos minutos de ventaja sobre su compatriota y medallista de plata Annabel Luxford. A otros dos minutos de desventaja llegó la neozelandesa Nicky Samuels en tercera posición.

Las dos australianas dominaron la mayor parte de la carrera saliendo del agua en cabeza y alejándose en la bicicleta de la neozelandesa Andrea Hewitt antes de que Moffatt tomase el mando a comienzos de la carrera a pie. Hewitt fue incapaz de seguir el ritmo y fue finalmente superada por Samuels.

Moffatt se mostraba encantada con su trabajo diario en difíciles condiciones.

“Fue una carrera con mucho viento y difícil pero fue una buena carrera, en la que me sentí bien toda la carrera. Mis transiciones en la bicicleta y en la carrera a pie han sido buenas y sólo corrí de una manera sólida y estable lo que me proporcionó una ventaja ganadora. No me he preparado específicamente para esta carrera, yo corrí la semana pasada también, pero mi verdadero objetivo está dentro de tres semanas en Mooloolaba.”

Como contrapunto Luxford cruzó la línea de meta aquejada de una lesión en la espinilla e inmediatamente se puso hielo para calmar el dolor y la inflamación.

“El viento hizo la carrera de hoy muy dura. Yo nadé bien y encabecé la transición pero perdí algo de tiempo con una zapatilla que se había caído de mi bicicleta. Tuve que trabajar duro rápidamente para regresar al grupo de cabeza. Desde aquí trabajamos bien juntos pero en el momento que me golpeé sentí la espinilla y luché mucho tiempo. La lesión ha resurgido en las últimas semanas por lo que estoy solamente contenta por tener esta carrera fuera de mi camino y cuando llegue a casa miraré como remediarlo.”

La victoria da al menos una plaza Olímpica para Australia pero eso no garantiza que esa plaza vaya para Moffatt. La selección del equipo Olímpico Australiano es discrecional. La victoria de Moffatt unida a la alta clasificación de Luxford, Emma snowsill y Felicity Abram significa que Australia probablemente presente un equipo completo de tres atletas femeninas en Beijing.

En la prueba masculina, la noticia estaba en si Australia podría irse con la victoria y alcanzar una tercera plaza Olímpica. La tradicional potencia del triatlón está en una burbuja y actualmente en una posición de enviar a tan sólo dos atletas a Beijing. Sus oportunidades se vieron reducidas por la retirada de sus corredores favoritos Craig Walton y Peter Robertson, los cuales no tomaron la salida.

Eso dejaría la puerta abierta para que Reed se llevase la victoria y su compañero de equipo Bevan Docherty se hiciese con la plata. El joven James Seear de Australia hizo una gran carrera y terminó en tercera posición.

Fue una Victoria muy emocional para Reed.

“Mi abuelo falleció esta semana y el funeral fue el viernes, pero estoy seguro que él se despertó para verme hoy, por lo que corrí para él. Me sentí fuerte todo el día y obviamente estoy encantado por la victoria y también por conseguir para Nueva Zelanda una tercera plaza en Beijing. Sólo espero no haber alcanzado mi mejor estado de forma demasiado pronto porque se que lo tengo todo por hacer otra vez en Mooloolaba dentro de tres semanas. Auguro que sólo tengo que ir y ganar otra vez.”

Un grupo de 15 atletas salieron pegados del agua y encabezaron los 40 kilómetros de bicicleta con fuertes vientos. Era una lucha transoceánica entre las dos naciones.

En la bicicleta se hizo evidente que era un día para los atletas más fuertes y experimentados con el viento sacudiendo a los atletas por todo el recorrido de la pintoresca Bahía Oriental con los neozelandeses Docherty, Reed y Kris Gemmell liderando la carrera.

Al inicio del segmento de carrera a pie Docherty fue el primero en atacar y sólo Reed le respondió con una carrera extraordinaria para la exaltación de los aficionados neozelandeses y los abrazos de su esposa y su joven hijo.

Con la victoria Reed ha asegurado una plaza para Nueva Zelanda en los Juegos Olímpicos, pero sabe que todavía tiene que trabajar duro para ser elegido. La última prueba calificadora para Nueva Zelanda es la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG de Mooloolaba el 30 de Marzo. EL primer neocelandés hombre y mujer en cruzar la línea de meta son elegibles para el nombramiento.
